In her kitchen, Crystal Wilkinson feels the presence of five generations of Black women who came before her as she makes buttermilk biscuits, deviled eggs, and blackberry cobbler. Growing up in Appalachia, food was about community and family. Now Wilkinson, a former poet laureate of Kentucky, is passing her stories and recipes down to her own children and grandchildren in her new book, "Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts.”
