Andrew Newberg is one of the founders of neurotheology, the study of how the brain can give us experiences of enlightenment. He’s done hundreds of brain scans — of meditating monks and praying nuns, psychic mediums, Pentecostals and Sufi mystics. He says they all have their own neural signatures.
