Steven Hall was born in Greater Manchester in 1975 and grew up in Glossop, Derbyshire. He worked as a photographer’s assistant and (very briefly) as a private detective before moving to Sheffield to study Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University. Over the course of his studies, his work evolved from art with a textual element to fiction with a visual element.
Steven’s short piece Stories for a Phone Book was included New Writing 13 (British Council/Picador) in 2005 and two years later, his first novel The Raw Shark Texts, was published by Canongate in the UK. The Raw Shark Texts won the Borders Original Voices Award 2007, the Somerset Maugham Award and was shortlisted for the Arthur C Clarke Award. The book has been translated into thirty languages and a film adaptation is currently in development.
Steven is currently working on his second novel, amongst other things. He lives in Preston with his girlfriend and a dalek.
