What happens when we die? What's it like to be brought back to life? Humans have been asking these questions for millennia. Now, advances in resuscitation may be adding more insight into “near death experiences.” Can these experiences be explained through the lens of biology and neuroscience?
TTBOOK’s Steve Paulson hosts a discussion with neurologist Kevin Nelson, psychiatrist Peter Fenwick, orthopedic surgeon Mary Neal, and emergency medicine expert Sam Parnia. What can we learn from the transformative accounts of people who have crossed the threshold of death? How have their experiences affected their sense of self and identity? Watch as they share stories and discuss how they study such experiences.
The discussion was held at the New York Academy of Sciences in December, 2013, as part of the four-part series “Rethinking Mortality: Exploring the Boundaries Between Life and Death.” It was presented by the Nour Foundation, the New York Academy and TTBOOK.
