Where do you go, when you want to feel small in the face of something vast and mysterious? When you want to feel your soul shiver open, or fall into a state of awe or wonder? The world’s religions are full of language and ceremony designed to spark those feelings, but the old sacred traditions don’t speak to many of us today. Historian and poet Jennifer Michael Hecht, the author of “Doubt” and “The End of the Soul,” says there’s another, even older tradition we can all access – poetry.
