The mystery drives this persuit just as much as the answers.

Consciousness is, when some brain activities come into perception - it is the experience of perception.
When we make a new experience - when we perceive , some areas of the brain are acive - and when we remember (recall) this experience, then the same areas are active again: this means, to remember is a re-experience.
Thus we can say: consciousness/perception is tied up to parts/areas of the brain which are activated. Without this activation, no consciousness is possible.

This has consequences: without these areas/parts of the brain which are activated, no consciousness/perception is possible - thus we never will be able to produce a digital copy of mind. This is similar to your computer - all the data are useless when you do not have the activated display on the monitor to observe it
