Steve Paulson prepared this report on the state of thinking about consciousness. We hear from Artificial Intelligence pioneer Marvin Minsky, physicist Roger Penrose, philosopher Daniel Dennett, New Age guru Deepak Chopra, and many more.
The mystery drives this persuit just as much as the answers.
Consciousness is, when some brain activities come into perception - it is the experience of perception.
When we make a new experience - when we perceive , some areas of the brain are acive - and when we remember (recall) this experience, then the same areas are active again: this means, to remember is a re-experience.
Thus we can say: consciousness/perception is tied up to parts/areas of the brain which are activated. Without this activation, no consciousness is possible.
This has consequences: without these areas/parts of the brain which are activated, no consciousness/perception is possible - thus we never will be able to produce a digital copy of mind. This is similar to your computer - all the data are useless when you do not have the activated display on the monitor to observe it
