Daniel Tammet has memorized the number pi into the tens of thousands of digits. He's learned new languages in just a few weeks. He describes the gift - and the burden - of being an autistic savant.
In seeking a place of peace and a better understanding of our minds, I wonder if we might see our neurons and all our cells taking care of each other. The heart cells are always beating so that all our cells might have the oxygen they need. Our red blood cells are always caring for all our cells, carrying oxygen so that all our cells have all the oxygen they need. All our cells have their way of caring for all the other cells. If we define an act of love as an act which sustains or enhances life, we might see all our cells as performing acts of love. Outside our body, people are performing similar tasks. The cells of our arteries make channels to carry the blood to all our cells. People make roads to carry food to all the people of our communities. Like our kidneys cleansing our blood, people make water treatment plants to clean our community's water. The neurons of our brains work together to prioritize how we should spend our energy. Congressman work together to prioritize how we should spend our tax money. If people could see the love within their body, might they be so grateful they would spend their time trying to share that love with the people around them? If people could see the love within their body, might they feel so good, they might feel like singing Maria's song in West Side Story - "I Feel Pretty" with the last line being "For I'm loved by an incredibly wonderful Lord."? For atheists, might they define "the Lord" as those forces and conditions which have brought us The Laws of Physics?
